The ginkgo family crest. The ginkgo is a plant that came from China (Song Dynasty). In the Song Dynasty, it was called 'yachao' or 'duck foot' due to the shape of its leaves resembling a duck's foot, and this name was later corrupted to 'ginkgo' or 'icho' in Japanese. The ginkgo is also known as 'gusonju' or 'public grandson tree', as it takes a long time to bear fruit, symbolizing longevity and prosperity of descendants (from 'Kamon Shireba Shiru Hodo' by Danwa Keiji). The name is based on 'Mon no Izumi' and 'Mon no Shiori', but 'Mon Den' refers to it as 'circle with modified ginkgo crane'.
