City - Alexandria VA - A view from Pioneer Mill Jigsaw Puzzle
Colourized photo from 1865, May
Original Title: View from Pioneer Mill
Original Photographer: Andrew Russell
Location: Duke and Strand St., Alexandria, VA
We are standing on to of the Pioneer Mill. It was built in 1854, when running it was the largest steam flour mill in the country. It stood 6 stories high, and produced 800 barrels of flour a day. Using 4000 bushels of wheat each day, they ran out of the material quickly. The surrounding area could not produce what this plant needed. Despite being next to a marina and a train service, they could never bring in enough, as a result, they failed and were in a lot of debt.
The ended up selling their mill wheels, and using the building as a storage facility during the war. Warships docked there as well. The building changed hands a number of times over the years. In 1896, a cyclone damaged it, and in 1897, it burned to the ground. It stood empty till 1910, till the Emerson Engine Company built a machine shop there, in its foot print. The building was later torn down in 1937... Then later in 2017, they found the original foundation of this very mill.
You can't see the mill in this image because we are on it. This location is roughly on the corner of Duke and Strand st. Further up is where waterfront park will be. At least one building survives to this day and that's the Fitzgerald Warehouse, presently it holds a famous coffee store. It located roughly near that green building in the middle. Its a little hard to recognise because it's fused to another building near by it. You can still recognise the roof line where a pulley once attached.

I got this image in 110 pieces as I cannot commit to large puzzles. This one took me about an hour and was fairly easy. Perhaps 252 pieces would have better suited me for a little more complexity. This is not my favourite sugar skull as I prefer more girly colours like hot pink, reds and purples but I enjoyed doing this one. There is a lot of detail in the image and it was interesting to do. I don't think I will buy the larger puzzle count just because there are other sugar skull images that I much prefer.
Again very good quality puzzle and durable storage box that fits very well on small bookcase. The image was well positioned on this one so who ever printed this one got it pretty bang on.

I like puzzles but can't commit to thousands of pieces. I chose this one in 110 pieces because I wanted a challenge that could be completed in a few hours. This one took approx 3.5 hours to complete. The image is pretty uniform throughout so may seem daunting but some of the jigsaw pieces are quite unique which helps. You definitely need a good eye for detail and this puzzle is challenging and engaging giving the satisfaction of completion after a relatively short commitment of time.
I do not like thousands of pieces because I don't have the time or motivation to keep going back to a puzzle which needs to be stored and moved and this can result in a loss of pieces.
The box the puzzle is supplied in is good quality and will store the puzzle safely for a long time. The box also fits on one of my small bookcase so storage is very easy. The puzzle print is slightly smaller than the image on the box and this makes orientation of the puzzle harder. The image is of really good quality though and I'm happy with the quality of this aspect.

I bought this image in 110 pieces because I like puzzles I can complete in a few hours. This one took me about 1.5 hours. It was surprisingly challenging in that in the nebular section of the image the pieces were difficult to orientate. It was difficult to gauge which pieces were right without trying them and sometimes I thought certain pieces wouldn't fit and they did. It must be the way the image is made up that it tricks the eye. I definitely found it harder than I thought it would be so yes it's a challenge.
As always very good quality puzzle in a very durable box that stores really well on my small bookcase. The image was well orientated on the puzzle so I would say the printer got this one pretty bang on. Very good quality image.
