City - Buffalo NY - Signs of the Times 1900 Jigsaw Puzzle

Colorized photo from 1900 Original title: Main St. Photographer: Detroit Publishing Location: 336 Main St, Buffalo, NY Streets change so much over the years, if you were standing in this spot today, there wouldn't be one thing you would recognize except, interestingly enough, the street car line, because that they kept. This spot is roughly around 336 Main St in Buffalo, NY. On the right is the Iroquois Hotel, opened August 3rd 1889, then later rebuilt in 1901. It was finally demolished in 1940, as many of the other buildings were too. The building that replaced this hotel was the Bond Clothing Co Building. You'll note that it says Fire Proof on the roof, that's because this hotel replaced another one that was on this spot that burned down. They used a granite substructure, and fire proof tiles on the roof, it was built very solidly. It was also a complete hotel in that it had a small clothing store, and a barbershop, along with anything you might need if you were staying there. On the left is the Lyceum Theater, from what you can see here, it was a good place to hang signs. They love their signs. So much so that there are actually four different sign stores on this one block. Or one single store with a lot of different signs. Also if you look around you'll see quite a few hands pointing at something, one of them is actually a large 3d hand, pointing to something across the street. Oh and that symbol of a globe on the back of the theater is what they used to advertise the Pan-American Exposition of 1901. Licensed to be used as the symbol and nothing else. But, like all copyright breaches, people used it for everything anyway, and made an entire array of products using their own version. I also wonder what museums were like in the past. I bet it was pretty neat. And note the people catcher on the street car. Not all of them had one however, you would have to go out of your way to choose the one that won't simply run you over.

I got this image in 110 pieces as I cannot commit to large puzzles. This one took me about an hour and was fairly easy. Perhaps 252 pieces would have better suited me for a little more complexity. This is not my favourite sugar skull as I prefer more girly colours like hot pink, reds and purples but I enjoyed doing this one. There is a lot of detail in the image and it was interesting to do. I don't think I will buy the larger puzzle count just because there are other sugar skull images that I much prefer. Again very good quality puzzle and durable storage box that fits very well on small bookcase. The image was well positioned on this one so who ever printed this one got it pretty bang on.

I like puzzles but can't commit to thousands of pieces. I chose this one in 110 pieces because I wanted a challenge that could be completed in a few hours. This one took approx 3.5 hours to complete. The image is pretty uniform throughout so may seem daunting but some of the jigsaw pieces are quite unique which helps. You definitely need a good eye for detail and this puzzle is challenging and engaging giving the satisfaction of completion after a relatively short commitment of time. I do not like thousands of pieces because I don't have the time or motivation to keep going back to a puzzle which needs to be stored and moved and this can result in a loss of pieces. The box the puzzle is supplied in is good quality and will store the puzzle safely for a long time. The box also fits on one of my small bookcase so storage is very easy. The puzzle print is slightly smaller than the image on the box and this makes orientation of the puzzle harder. The image is of really good quality though and I'm happy with the quality of this aspect.

We are pleased with the jigsaw itself. However we are disappointed the box is far bigger than the jigsaw and not the kind of storage box we expected i.e. Ravensburger standard; rather it's a postage box and not very sturdy at that. Given it cost £18 + pp we did expect more. The image quality is good. The pieces are rather thin and flimsy.
