City - Chicago - Traffic jam on Dearborn St 1909 Jigsaw Puzzle

Colourized photo from 1909, May Original title: Traffic jam on Dearborn Street, Chicago, Illinois Photographer: Frank M. Hallenbeck Location: Dearborn and Randolph, Chicago, IL Traffic was a real nightmare in the past, no one directing traffic, no traffic lights, no stop signs etc, anyone could go at any time, dodging people, streetcars and wagons. How people didn't die every second is beyond me. This image became iconic to Chicago since the early 1900's. People associated it with how busy this city was and how hectic the streets were. There was only one problem, its fake, the entire scene was staged. It seems that the Chicago Commerce Dept, paid the cops to sit back for 5 minutes and let the traffic pile up so they can get a look at what would happen if there were no traffic cops directing traffic. It was later used in 1911 titled, "For five minutes the police refrained from regulation of traffic at Randolph and Dearborn Streets". There are different stories of how it happened, some said the photographer paid the cops not to do there job for 5 minute, for a photo op, but that doesn't seem likely. Nor does it look like 5 minutes passed, as there are a lot of people, and a lot of street cars. If we figure there is a new car every block to block and a half, they would have had to sit there for a while to accumulate like that. With all the noise and such, people noticed and went to the windows, people are posing and looking at the photographer even at a great distance. The street car towards us, would have already have left the scene since they aren't in the intersection. So I'm thinking this was closer to 20 or more minutes to set this up. They didn't mention how long it took to untangle the mess or how late people were. Staged or not, its still a fascinating image, showing what types of goods were moved about. The barrel wagon, another full of crates, or that one that is filled with 5 gallon glass jugs, imagine having to carry that up a flight of stairs with water in it? That must have been a nightmare. Then you had to carry the empty back and not break it. Today this location is gone. While there is an old building left on the right, the rest were replaced with modern buildings.

I got this image in 110 pieces as I cannot commit to large puzzles. This one took me about an hour and was fairly easy. Perhaps 252 pieces would have better suited me for a little more complexity. This is not my favourite sugar skull as I prefer more girly colours like hot pink, reds and purples but I enjoyed doing this one. There is a lot of detail in the image and it was interesting to do. I don't think I will buy the larger puzzle count just because there are other sugar skull images that I much prefer. Again very good quality puzzle and durable storage box that fits very well on small bookcase. The image was well positioned on this one so who ever printed this one got it pretty bang on.

We are pleased with the jigsaw itself. However we are disappointed the box is far bigger than the jigsaw and not the kind of storage box we expected i.e. Ravensburger standard; rather it's a postage box and not very sturdy at that. Given it cost £18 + pp we did expect more. The image quality is good. The pieces are rather thin and flimsy.

Jigsaw puzzle is of excellent quality, finish. Only thing I was not too happy about was the actual image printed on the outside of the accompanying presentation box. It was printed approximately A6 in size and was half the actual size of the presentation box. Making it difficult for me to see the actual jigsaw puzzle design when trying to put together the actual jigsaw puzzle :(. Printing of jigsaw puzzle image on the outside of the presentation box was approximately A6 in size and was half the actual size of the presentation box.
