City - Mackinac Island MI - Nautical dude 1906 Tile

Colorized photo from 1906 Original title: The Harbor, Mackinac Island, Mich Photographer: Detroit Publishing Location: Mackinac, MI This is Mackinac Island as seen in 1906, we are near the ferry dock. This exact location doesn't exist today though. I think its a bit further in. In the distance you can see a few ferries coming in. The one on the right is the Chippewa that brings guests to the Chippewa hotel, the other is the Algomin. You can triangulate yourself by using Saint Anne's church, that's poking up in the background, there are also a few houses that exist today. In the foreground, those boats are called fishing smacks. In its day, this island had a large fishery, this industry replaced the last one, they traded in fur. In fact many of these boats are converted fur carrying boats. I don't know what the difference would be though. There are many species of fish in the water, quoted by Henry Schoolcraft, a geographer, he raved about he variety of fish. There were trout, white fish, lake herring, bass, sturgeon and more. Even today people fish these waters but mostly for fun. In the 1860's, they would sell this for 2 cents a pound (which is about 68 cents today), but they sold it in volume, so they were still able to make a living. Because they caught fish, they employed barrel makers, the fish was salted and sent overseas. Today this island is mostly known for fudge, clean air and Victorian homes. It's a vacation travel spot, but you can still fish if you want. And the water does look like this, its tropical like.

Really nice image fixed to the tiles in my shower as a background to a soap dish. This was to hide the marks left by a broken soap dish. Just used tile adhesive and white grout. I think it looks good, almost like the drips are falling from the soap dish. No probs. Nice image.

My heart skipped a beat when I found this collection of Art Nouveau designs. I have created a fireplace where there was none. Amazing. The tiles were exactly as depicted
