This design features a painting by the Russian artist Vasily Vereshchagin (1842–1904). It shows a grand building in Samarkand (sometimes spelled as Samarqand), which is a city in southeastern Uzbekistan and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. Due to its fortunate location on the Silk Road between China, Persia and Europe, Samarkand was once one of the largest cities of Central Asia. The original artwork was painted by Vasily Vereshchagin in 1869.
