Claude Monet: Japanese Footbridge Poster

Claude Monet was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting. The footbridge in Claude Monet’s painting actually existed in his Giverny garden. Although a simple structure, it is a striking–flanked by willows and covered in wisteria. Monet had the bridge constructed in 1893. Monet had a love for all things Japanese, so the style of the footbridge over his water lily pond isn't surprising. Monet employed local craftsmen for the bridge, but when the gardens were restored in the late 1970s the footbridge had to be replaced.
