Clifton Shark Files T-Shirt

In 1976 great white sharks were behaving 'aggressively.' The local press, in the wake of 'Jaws', published a series of reports attempting to explain this odd behaviour by great whites in False Bay. One popular theory at the time centre on a food stock shortage put forward by the Department of Fisheries. The theory suggested that since seal carcasses were no longer being thrown back into the ocean, sharks were turning 'mean.' An attack, suggested the media was imminent. But, when a great white did finally bite a human it was on the last place that anyone expected. The incident forms part of the 'Mean Season' of 1976 when attitudes towards great whites were unforgiving....
