Big Ben seen at an angle, in black and white. Big Ben is the affectionate name given to the famous clock in the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament, London. Strictly speaking the name Big Ben refers to the clock itself, not the clock tower! Here is a photo of the clock face, showing the hands and roman numerals. You can also see the detailed stonework of the tower. Big Ben is very popular with tourists. The Palace of Westminster (which homes the two Houses of Parliament) was destroyed by fire in 1834. In 1844, it was decided the new buildings for the Houses of Parliament should include a tower and a clock. The bell was refashioned in Whitechapel in 1858 and the clock first rang across Westminster on 31 May 1859.
