Prior to independence, Texas was one of two territories comprising the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas, represented by this flag. Both Texas and Coahuila seceded from Mexico because of Santa Anna's attempts to centralise the government, with Texas forming the Republic of Texas and Coahuila joining with Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to form the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande.
