Bishkek's Soviet relics have gone from despised pieces of architecture to much appreciated monuments of the past. Bishkek is quickly becoming a modern city, with towers and shopping centres sprouting up at breakneck pace. Although the Kyrgyz people have been independant since 1991, there is a certain affinity for the Soviet Union. The Bishkek National Theatre and Opera House (built when the city was called Frunze) is still in use today and is popular among tourists visiting Kyrgyzstan.
