This was during a moment of celebration and relief at the end of World War II. The original title of the painting is "A Toast (2 May 1945)", and the date is when Berlin fell to the Allied forces and also when German forces surrendered in Italy. The face of the young woman shown here is lit up with an excited yet serene expression. She is wearing a glamourous red dress and is in a courtyard with potted plants behind her. The sky is bright, suggesting a sense of hope, renewal and the promise of a peaceful future.
