It is a member of the Mullets family and is native to India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar. It is found in rivers and estuaries with fresh or brackish water. It feeds on algae, bacteria, plant matter, and other microorganisms. It has the ability to swim with its eyes on or near the surface of the water. This adaptation allows the fish to simultaneously see above and below the water surface.  It can reach a maximum length of 45 cm (17.7 inches).
