Cube Houses Netherlands Postcard

The Cube Houses of Rotterdam, designed by architect Piet Blom in the late 1970s and completed in 1984, represent one of the most iconic and avant-garde examples of modern urban architecture. Built on the concept of 'living as an urban roof,' each house is tilted at a 45-degree angle and sits atop a hexagonal pylon, collectively forming a unique structural forest. Blom designed these structures to optimise space and challenge traditional housing concepts, creating a village-within-a-city that feels entirely detached from conventional geometry. From the outside, the bright yellow and grey cubes create an striking visual puzzle against the sky, drawing architecture enthusiasts from around the globe. The interior is equally surreal, split into three distinct levels with sharply slanting walls and custom furniture crafted to adapt to the unique angles. Located right next to the Blaak station, this neighbourhood remains a vibrant, lived-in testament to post-war Dutch structuralism and creative urban planning.
