Cube Houses Netherlands Postcard

The Cube Houses, or Kubuswoningen, are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam, designed by architect Piet Blom and completed in 1984. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees and anchored it on a hexagon-shaped pylon, creating a unique living space that optimises the interior footprint. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together form a conceptual forest. This architectural marvel is a prime example of structuralism, designed to provide a high-density housing solution with sufficient space on the ground level. The houses are a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world who marvel at their asymmetric, geometric design. One of the cubes, the Kijk-Kubus, is open to the public as a museum, allowing visitors to experience what it feels like to live inside a tilted home with angled walls and windows.
