Black squirrels are a melanistic form of Eastern Greys in the north or fox squirrels further south. Squirrels don't hibernate in winter, although they stash nuts & seeds in their nests and may lie low in blizzards, intense cold or freezing rain. They also bury stashes and sometimes forget about them - and thus a mighty oak grows from a forgotten acorn. Fun frolicsome urban wildlife, squirrels can be friendly and take food from your hand if you're patient. Lively and smart, these little mammals love to play and chase each other, especially in the frisky time of spring.
