Point Lowly in South Australia's Upper Spencer Gulf is the only known place in the world where cuttlefish gather to breed annually in their thousands. The population crashed suddenly this year, and pressures from proposed industrialisation on the adjacent shore, particularly a desalination plant could wipe out the population permanently. Outfall from desalination plants is very salty, and denser than the ambient ocean. As a result the brine settles, suffocating organism which live or lay their eggs on or near the ocean floor.
