'Elijah in the Wilderness' is inspired by an episode from the Old Testament described in 1 Kings, chapter 19 verses 4 – 7. Elijah, escaping from Jezebel, who had vowed to kill him, went for a day’s journey into the desert, sat beneath a tree and asked that he might die. However, an angel appeared with bread and water which sustained him on his subsequent journey of forty days. Painted by Sir Frederic Leighton.
