About This Design
Dogs Playing Poker (Animal Card Game) Doormat
This design features a painting by the American artist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (1844–1934), known affectionately as Cash or Kash. It shows a group of St Bernard dogs acting like humans as they play the card game poker. There are four dogs sitting around a circular table covered with a green poker cloth. They have adopted anthopomorphic postures and facial expressions. The dogs are depicted wearing human-like clothes and accessories, such as glasses, and they're leaning over the table as they play the game of cards. The dogs are sitting in very grand and opulent chairs. Some of the dogs are smoking cigars and there is a bottle of whisky beside the table, suggesting that they're engaging in traditionally human vices. The dogs are looking at each other playfully and warily as they compete to win the game of poker. There are casino-style chips spread in piles across the table. The original art was painted in 1894. It has become a very popular painting because of its relatable and humourous depiction of animals engaging in a typically human activity.
