Easter Island, known as Rapa Nui, was settled by Polynesians around 1200 AD and later annexed by Chile in 1888, becoming famous for its mysterious and impressive Moai statues. Key sights include Ahu Tongariki, the largest collection of restored Moai, and Rano Raraku, the volcanic quarry where these massive statues were carved. The island also hosts the annual Tapati Rapa Nui Festival, a vibrant celebration of Polynesian culture featuring traditional music, dance, and athletic competitions.
