The son of a merchant, Eelke Jelles Eelkema was a Dutch painter of landscapes, flowers, and fruits who lived from 1788 –1839. Due to an illness, Eelkema became deaf when he was about seven years old and as a result was educated at the first Dutch institution for the deaf and dumb at Groningen. He was instructed in the art of drawing and in 1804 he received the first prize of the academy. He would later live in Paris and travelled on foot through France, Switzerland, and Italy making sketches. He continued his craft and continued painting until he lost his sight.
