Egle, Queen of the Serpents, Palanga, Lithuania - Magnet

We so enjoyed our visit to Palanga, a lovely and lively town on the Baltic Sea, as well as numerous other locales in western Lithuania during a heritage trip in June 2013. This graceful metal sculpture of Egle, Queen of the Serpents, sits at the entrance of the Palanga Botanical Gardens and Amber Museum. Egle is the main character in a famous Lithuanian folktale. Egle’s name translates to Spruce, so you can guess her ultimate fate, as well as the related fates of her four children —whose names translate to Oak, Ash, Birch, and Aspen. My cousin, Egle, a wonderful person, linguist, and guide, took us around Lithuania and shared many less travelled spots so worth seeing, and then drove us to two family reunions and served as translator, too.
