Hieroglyphs were the sacred writing of Ancient Egypt and in the temples they were carved and painted in gloriously bright colors. Very few examples of this ancient art remain, but at Medinet Habu, the funerary temple built by Pharaoh Ramses III on the west bank of the Nile at Luxor, you can still see hieroglyphs painted in vivid shades of turquoise, blue, gold, red and green.
