El Greco Burial of the Count of Orgaz mug. Oil painting on canvas from 1587. One of El Greco’s greatest paintings, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz depicts the burial of Don Gonzalo Ruiz, who was according to tradition an extremely pious and charitable nobleman. At Ruiz’ death, legend suggests that Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine descended from heaven to bury the count in front of his astonished mourners. Above the burial scene, the painting features a dramatic depiction of heaven with swirling clouds framing Saint Peter, the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and the extended heavenly host. El Greco employed a rich use of red, blue, gold, yellow and black to provide the painting with a masterly radiance of expression. A great gift for fans of El Greco, Spanish renaissance art, and colourful religious painting.
