At Ruiz’ death, legend suggests that Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine descended from heaven to bury the count in front of his astonished mourners. Above the burial scene, the painting features a dramatic depiction of heaven with swirling clouds framing Saint Peter, the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and the extended heavenly host. El Greco employed a rich use of red, blue, gold, yellow and black to provide the painting with a masterly radiance of expression.
