Eleonora de' Medici Poster

Eleonora de' Medici (1567–1611) was the Duchess of Mantua and an important patron of the arts during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. She is notably connected to Peter Paul Rubens through his first major commissioned work, The Descent from the Cross (1600–1602), which Rubens painted for her private chapel. This altarpiece marked a breakthrough in Rubens’s career and was created specifically for Eleonora’s chapel in Mantua. The painting is significant for its innovative composition and symbolic embodiment of the duchess, represented by a kneeling woman receiving the body of Christ as a lover would receive the Eucharist
