Pere Borrell del Caso was a renowned Spanish painter, especially of trompe l’oeil works such as this one, titled Escaping Criticism from 1874. Trompe l’oeil literally means in French ‘trick the eye’ and alludes to works that muddy the difference between the illusion of the painting and the real world of the spectator. Here a boy is making his escape through a window whose frame is simultaneously the frame of a picture. He seems to the eye to be leaping from the world of the picture into ours.
