Euclid's proof of the pythagorean theorem large tote bag
Although this is not the most visually apparent or intuitive proof of the pythagorean theorem, it is the result of a series of "propositions" that build upon one another in Euclid's "Element". In this case, the square on the hypotenuse is divided into two parts so that each part corresponds to each square on the other two sides. The oblique triangles are then used to relate the area on the side to part of the area on the hypotenuse. This can be done because the triangles are congruent to each other and the respective areas are twice the area of the triangle. It can be quite a mental feat to figure this out, but the "aha" that follows when one finally sees it is well worth the effort!
