Eve and Lilith Tapestry

Eve and Lilith Tapestry

Lilith & Eve tapestry. Two powerful women, Eve and Lilith, holding hands in solidarity. As stand-alone characters from the Bible, Eve and Lilith have often been portrayed in a negative light. Eve is blamed for the fall of humanity, while Lilith is demonized as a seductive and dangerous figure. But in this artwork, I wanted to depict them as equals, united in their shared experiences and struggles. According to some interpretations, Lilith was the first wife of Adam, but refused to submit to him and was cast out of the Garden of Eden. She became a symbol of rebellion and independence, inspiring women to stand up for themselves and fight against oppression. Eve, was then created by God from Adams rib, deeming her lesser of the two. However, she is often also seen as the mother of all humanity, the first woman who tasted the fruit of knowledge and brought enlightenment to the world. In this drawing, Eve holds the forbidden apple while Lilith holds the serpent, which are both strongs symbols for either figure. The dove on Eve's side of the tapestry symbolizes youth and innocence, while the owl on Lilith's side represents maturity and wisdom. What if Eve's awakening through eating the apple was actually triggered by Lilith's influence, who manifested as the serpent? What if Lilith, the original awakener, taught Eve to question authority and seek truth? In this artwork, I invite you to imagine a different narrative, one where Eve and Lilith support each other and challenge the structures that seek to divide and conquer them.
