Extermination of Evil (2)

A 12th century Japanese colour print. The scene depicted comes from a Buddhist tale relates about Shōki. Shoki is a demon-slaying deity from China, who according to legend protected the Tang emperor Xuanzong (685-762) from evil demons. He is portrayed with large eyes and a thick beard and is wearing a black robe and tall black boots. Here, he is shown strangling a small demon. He's also wearing a large red hat, which almost looks like it's on fire. The artist has signed or written about the famous tale on the left in what looks like Kanji characters and Hiragana (the Japanese writing).

Looked great and was perfect for my Nana's 99th it arrived super quick so much quicker than sending the original from the other side of the world!
