Fado was sung by the working-class quarters of Lisbon in the mid-19th century. Fado houses were concentrated in Lisbon's historic quarters, mainly in Bairro Alto, from the 1930s onwards. Fado was at first sung in taverns, brothels, and street corners in Alfama and Mouraria, the old poor sections of Lisbon. From then on, the reputation of this very Portuguese musical genre was unstoppable. The fado song is normally accompanied by one Portuguese guitar and one classic guitar, which in Portugal is called a viola. The skilled singers are known as fadistas and the tradition was that women wear a black dress and a shawl.
