Fado was sung by the working-class quarters of Lisbon in the mid-19th century. Fado houses were concentrated in Lisbon's historic quarters, mainly in Bairro Alto, from the 1930s onwards. Fado was at first sung in taverns, brothels, and street corners in Alfama and Mouraria, the old poor sections of Lisbon.
