Famous Orangutan Mother Mouse Mat

Over 40 years ago, this famous great ape, Akmad the orangutan, graced the cover of National Geographic magazine, but she is still alive and raising children of her own in the rainforest of Tanjung Puting National Park,Indonesian side of the island of Borneo. This is her son Atlas on her back in this photo. If you search for that October 1975 issue online, Akmad is the toddler out in front, holding the hand of Dr. Birute' M. Galdikas, the founder of Orangutan Foundation International. Akmad's little son, shown here riding on her back, seemed to know that he had an important mother in the jungle hierarchy, and it was amusing to watch him reach out and grab some food from a sub-adult male orangutan. Of course, the baby had one hand grasping part of mummy's arm while he snatched the stuff he wanted. The artist uses 100% of the profits from all wildlife/orangutan products to support these endangered great apes as well as other wildlife through numerous animal charities. Want to do more?
