The stylish and elegant Van Gogh Fishing Boats on the Beach at Saintes-Maries (1888) spiral-bound writing notepad is enriched with the magnificent beach coastline with boats that the great Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh painted. In June 1888, Van Gogh took a bus via the Camargue, which reminded him of Holland, to reach Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a Mediterranean beach town. The fishing fleet, the oddly shaped thatched roofs on the homes, the fortified church built like a ship, and the fortified cathedral were all well-known features of the village. Van Gogh captured each of these. The sea and the colourful boats, though, were the region's distinctive attractions. Between 1881 and 1883, Van Gogh frequently visited Scheveningen, a fishing village and holiday spot on the North Sea not far from The Hague. He painted the huge fishing smacks that had washed ashore on the beach there in the manner of Hague School painters like Henrik Mesdag and Anton Mauve. Van Gogh's June 1888 voyage into sea paintings recalls their imagery as well as his own early explorations in this genre. In a letter on this seashore outing, he expressly compares Les Saintes-Maries to Dutch seascapes; the only distinction is that Dutch seascapes have more bright hues.
