Most of the city lies within Jackson County, with portions spilling into Clay, Cass, and Platte counties. However, the larger Kansas City metropolitan area straddles the Missouri–Kansas state line. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a port on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Kansas River from the west. Kansas City is sometimes known as the "City of Fountains", the "Paris of the Plains", or simply the "Heart of America". The city is also known by the abbreviations KC or KCMO. A resident of Kansas City, Missouri, is known as a Kansas Citian.
