Certain vantage points on the hills overlooking my city transport me back in time to when the industrial areas were lonely and forbidding and night, the dark side to the glowing metropolis across the river. Both skyscraper and warehouse seem to symbolise forces greater than we are. I can imagine walking home from work on a blustery winter evening in the 19th Century and seeing a mysterious, solitary and encouraging candle.
