Flight of Charles the Bold on Horseback Doormat
This design features a painting by the Swiss artist Eugène Burnand (1850–1921). It depicts a historical scene. It depicts the historical French King Charles the Bold fleeing from the Battle of Morat in 1476. He was again defeated by the Swiss army, which was assisted by the cavalry of the Duke of Lorraine, and he lost around one third of his entire army. Charles the Bold had to escape on horseback in order to save his own life. The painting shows knights riding horses furiously through a woodland landscape. The knights are in full suits of armour and they are holding lances and swords as weapons. There are some hunting dogs with the royal army too. The horses have coats of various colours, including black, brown, grey and white. The horses are decked out in royal regalia showing a coat of arms. There are tall trees growing in the densely forested woods in the background. The original artwork was painted by Eugène Burnand in 1895.
