Fort Cépérou sits on a hill overlooking the city of Cayenne and the mouth of the Cayenne River. Named after a local Indigenous chief, the fort is the historical birthplace of the city, established by French colonists in the 17th century. While only ruins of the original fortifications remain, the site offers the best panoramic views of the capital’s red-tiled roofs, the busy port, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a peaceful spot where history and modern city life meet, marked by a landmark bell tower that serves as a sentinel over the harbour.
