Japanese symbol for France with French flag colours. France's flag (tricolore drapeau) was officially adopted as the French national flag on February 15, 1794. The French flag is now made up of three equal vertical bands of blue, white, and red. The colours were orignally displayed the other way round, starting with the red. It is said that the red and blue colours represented Paris and the white was the royal family. The kanji (Chinese character) for France were chosen for phonetic reasons and these days it is more common to see France written using the katakana.
