Ia Orana Maria (We Hail Thee Mary) is a colourful Madonna work from the artist’s first Tahitian period. Mary is depicted as a Tahitian woman wearing a red sarong with white flowers as the baby Jesus sits serenely on her shoulder, both mother and sun are adorned with gold halos. Two worshippers stand nearby with an angel in a pink dress and blue and yellow wings bowing behind them. Colourful red and green tropical fruit sits on the table in the foreground.
