Gender is a Performance T-Shirt

Post-structuralist writer Judith Butler is renowned for her work on gender performativity: a theory which explains gender as an involuntary social performance-- a performance that is learned early on in childhood, and repeated over and over again, until gender roles (literally, "roles!") appear natural. If we have disciplined ourselves to behave within our gender roles (masculine v. feminine), then what happens when we step outside these narrow boxes? French philosopher Michel Foucault is famous for his lectures on the discipline and punishment of bodies. Even without reading Foucault, we can think of actions and social reactions in terms of discipline and punishments. Though we've briefly covered gender discipline above, try to brainstorm ways that we punish those that fail to fully 'perform' their gender roles. HINT: Try to think beyond bullying/teasing, and more on a global/professional scale to realise the full extent of gender performativity. Not sure where to begin?
