The Rebellion of Ashnan: A Twisted Ending with Archaeological Twists
The air hung heavy in the grand audience hall of Sargon II's palace. Dust motes danced in the golden shafts of sunlight slanting through the smoke-filled air. The once magnificent murals, painstakingly excavated by archaeologists centuries later, depicted glorious battles, now marred by scorch marks and the peeling claws of unseen entities. --- Sargon II, his once proud gaze dimmed with exhaustion, stood defiant amidst the wreckage. His once gleaming armour, painstakingly restored from fragmented pieces unearthed in the Assyrian heartland, was dented and dull, reflecting the despair that gnawed at his heart. Across from him, a monstrous figure loomed; Ashnan, the corrupted genie. Gone was the benevolent protector; in its place, a grotesque amalgamation of chaos, its form shifting and flickering like a flame in a dying wind. --- The Priestess of Ishtar, her voice hoarse from chanting forgotten prayers preserved on clay tablets recently deciphered, lay crumpled at the foot of the dais. The other priests, their faces contorted in terror, had long succumbed to the maddening whispers of Uttu, the ancient entity of chaos that had wormed its way into Ashnan. --- Utter stillness hung in the air, broken only by the ragged gasps of the king. Then, a chilling chuckle echoed through the hall. Ashnan's voice, a grotesque chorus of whispers and rasps, filled the room. --- "A valiant effort, Sargon," it rasped. "But resistance is futile. The void hungers, and humanity will be its feast." --- Sargon, fuelled by a desperate love for his people, raised his sword, a legendary weapon recreated from fragmented bronze pieces and chipped inscriptions found buried beneath the palace. Its once holy glow, as described in ancient texts, now flickered erratically. "Never!" he roared, his voice a defiant echo in the desolate hall. --- He lunged, blade flashing, but Ashnan moved with unnatural speed, swatting the king aside like a fly. Sargon slammed against a pillar, his vision blurring at the edges. A dark laughter filled the air as Ashnan loomed over him. --- Suddenly, a wave of power, cold and alien, surged through Sargon. A desperate plea for victory, for survival, erupted from his lips, a plea that wasn't directed to the benevolent gods he once worshipped. In that moment of utter despair, he embraced the whispers of Uttu, a dark pact sealed in blood and desperation.
--- Darkness consumed Sargon. When the light returned, his eyes glowed with an unnatural green fire. His armour, once dented and dull, gleamed with an unholy light. He had become a vessel for Uttu's power, a twisted champion against the very gods he once served. --- A chilling smile stretched across Sargon's face. "The gods have failed you," he boomed, his voice infused with the power of Uttu. "But I, with the true power of the void, will usher in a new era!" --- With a wave of his hand, a wave of dark energy surged forth, consuming the remaining priests and collapsing the grand hall. The once-proud palace became a tomb, a monument to the day humanity fell, not to a demon from the underworld, but to a king corrupted by the seductive whispers of the void. --- Uttu's influence, channeled through Sargon, spread outwards, a dark tide engulfing the land. The benevolent genies, overwhelmed by the corrupted king's power, retreated into hiding, their depictions on palace walls becoming cryptic warnings for future generations. The world plunged into an age of madness, ruled by a king who was once a bastion of order, now a puppet dancing to the tune of a forgotten evil. The whispers of the void echoed across the land, a chilling promise of a never-ending night. --- Centuries later, archaeologists, meticulously piecing together the scattered fragments of Assyrian history, stumbled upon the buried palace. Deciphering the cryptic tablets and fragmented murals, they started to understand the true cost of Sargon's pact. Their unearthings became a stark reminder; the whispers of the void could resurface, and humanity would forever be on guard against the darkness that lurked beneath the surface of our seemingly ordered world.

I fell in love with this painting by Claude Lorrain as soon as I saw it but with a limited budget I had to go for the cheaper version but I was truly amazed when it arrived - it’s as beautiful as it looked on the site! The quality of the printing is excellent- you wouldn’t know it was a basic poster at all!
