The Berlin subway, together with the S-Bahn and the metro lines by tram and bus, forms the backbone of public transport (public transport) in Berlin. Opened in 1902 as a high and underground railway, the metro is now extended to a network of four small and five large-profile lines with 175 railway stations and a total length of 155.4 kilometers operated by the Berlin transport companies (BVG). 1272 vehicles are used. Nearly 600 million passengers are carried each year. On regular services, the subway trains cover 21.6 million commercial train kilometers per year. The Berlin Metro has the largest underground network in the German-speaking area, measured by the length of the line and the number of stations. The S-Bahn Berlin is a railway system for public transport in Berlin and the surrounding area of the city. On a 340-kilometer network, 16 lines operate at 168 stations, of which approximately 83 kilometers and 36 stations are located in the Land of Brandenburg. The S-Bahn (city rail) is the first city express train to be called the S-Bahn (city rail) and, in addition to the Hamburg S-Bahn (city rail), the only one in Germany to operate with direct current from a side-mounted power rail. TRAM is one of the oldest and third largest tramways in the world, after which in Melbourne and St. Petersburg. The operators are the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), which was founded in 1929. The normal track network has a length of 193.6 kilometers and 808 alignment positions. 22 lines form a network of approximately 300 kilometers. The Berlin tramway carries 204 million passengers per year.
