Mist rises from the turbulent waters, adding a sense of motion and energy to the serene landscape. The Godafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. After visiting some waterfalls when it was rainy and cloudy, we were lucky to visit Godafoss when the sun was shining. The water of the river Skjalfandafljot falls from a height of 12 metres (about 40 feet) over a width of 30 metres (about 100 feet). Nicknamed ‘The Beauty’ in comparison to ‘The Beast’ of the waterfall Dettifoss, the name Goðafoss could be translated roughly as The Waterfall of The Gods. According to the Icelandic sagas, in about the year 1000, the Lawspeaker Thorgeir Ljosvetningagodi made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. After his conversion, legend says that Thorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. Godafoss is in northcentral Iceland south of Akureyri.
