Gonarezhou National Park Zimbabwe Postcard

Established in 1975, Gonarezhou National Park in southeastern Zimbabwe is a protected wilderness area spanning 5,053 square kilometres. The name Gonarezhou, which means "place of elephants," is fitting as the park is home to a significant population of these magnificent creatures. Part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, it shares borders with Kruger National Park in South Africa and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, allowing for wildlife migration across borders. Beyond its elephants, Gonarezhou is renowned for its iconic sandstone cliffs, particularly the dramatic Chilojo Cliffs that line the Runde River, and its diverse wildlife including wild dogs, lions, leopards, rhinos, and over 400 species of birds. The park offers a truly wild and untamed safari experience, emphasising its vast size and low visitor numbers. With the mighty Save, Runde, and Mwenezi Rivers flowing through its landscape, Gonarezhou’s ecosystems range from mopane woodlands and mahogany forests to spectacular floodplains and ironwood thickets. The rugged terrain and dramatic river views provide some of the most striking scenery in the region, making it a spectacular destination for those seeking solitude and an authentic connection with nature. Autumn is an excellent time to visit as the foliage turns into a stunning range of gold, orange, and amber hues and the animals gather near the shrinking water sources.
