Great Lakes whaleback steamer Atikoken / Atikokan aground in Marine City, Michigan. From an original Sol Foster photo negative in our private archive. The Canadian whaleback steamer " Atikokan" was "high and dry" on the bank of the St. Clair River at Marine City, Michigan on August 17, 1913. The Atikokan was built in 1895 in Superior Wisconsin. Her length was 308 feet with a 38-foot beam; she drew 24 feet. In the photo, she is mostly is out of the water while unbelieving on-lookers ponder her plight. It was not the first time this hard-luck boat had embarrassed her captain. While she was American-owned and known as the "John B. Trevor, " she grounded on Rocky Reef, Isle Royale Lake Superior on October 11, 1909. Fire damaged her at Halifax, Nova Scotia 1922 and she was finally scraped in 1935.
