Oedipus and the sphinx by Gustave Moreau About Gustave Moreau Gustave Moreau was a French Symbolist painter whose main emphasis was the illustration of biblical and mythological figures. He became a professor at Paris' �cole des Beaux-Arts in 1891 and among his many students were the fauvist painters, Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault. Jules Flandrin also studied with Moreau.
