A dominant figure in both the First and Second Party Systems, Henry Clay served in both the House of Representatives, where he was Speaker of the House, and the Senate, representing his home state of Kentucky. History remembers Clay for brokering important compromises during the Nullification Crisis and on the slavery issue, especially in 1820 and 1850. Clay was known as "the Great Compromiser".
