“The Elliots were one of the most active, most powerful and most notorious of the Scottish Border clans,” the clan’s website says. Hermitage Castle, near Liddesdale, is located in a lonely spot and said to be one of the most sinister-looking castles ever built. The castle has inspired local legends of the wicked Lord Soulis, a magician who sold his soul to the devil, and of a giant with impregnable armour.
