Pilot Wilbur Wright takes off from Governors Island with a red canvas canoe he purchased that morning in Manhattan lashed to his plane. 1600 ships and tens of thousands of observers lined New York Harbour to witness the historic flight. He flew over the Lusitania and wowed the crowd by deviating from his flight path as he looped around the Statue of Liberty's head while doing dips and turns. Wright’s flight was sensational news, and that he had taken off and landed from Governors Island and looped around the Statue of Liberty—over water—was the story of the year. It was front page news around the world.
